Someone left an old shelf down in the foyer of my apartment building back in May. I decided to turn it into something interesting. Enjoy

The original shelf was black, so the first step was to sand and prime.

Only after I primed the shelf did the idea of the dripping front come to me. I didn’t have the right tools for the job so I cut out the shapes with what I had on hand.

Once it was all cut out I used wood glue to attach it to the front of the shelf and used wood filler to fill in the gaps. After it dried I hand sanded everything until it was smooth and primed it again.

I covered the sides in painters tape and drew drips on top. I then used an exacto knife to cut away each layer as I spray painted each color

Finished all the layers.

The finished piece with line work and several coats of spray varnish.
